Shell Coin Purse

What do you do on a February afternoon when you are bored of all your big projects and fancy some quick gratification? You make a shell coin purse! It's a great way to stash bust those left over balls of yarn.

Shell Coin Purse

You need 50g dk yarn, a 3mm crochet hook and a 5/8" (15mm) button.

(British crochet terms used)

Make 20ch.

ROW 1 - DC into second ch from hook. Dc into each chain to end. Turn.

ROW 2 - 3ch, 2tr at base of 3ch. *Skip 2sts, dc in next st, skip 2sts, 5tr in next st. Repeat from * once more. Skip 2sts, dc in next st, skip 2 stitches, 3tr in next st. Turn.

ROW 3 - 1ch. Dc at base of 1ch. *SKip 2sts, 5tr in next st, skip 2sts, dc in next st. Repeat from * twice more. Turn.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 9 times.

Row 22 - 1ch, slst into next 3sts, skip 2sts, 5tr in next sts, skip 2 sts, dc in next sts, skip 2 sts, 5tr in next st, skip 2sts, dc in next sts. Turn.

Row 23 - 1ch, slst in next 3sts, skip 2 sts (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in next st, skip 2sts, dc in next sts. Fasten off.

Weave in ends. Fold up bottom half of purse to within an inch of where the flap shaping starts. Sew side seams. Sew on button. The 2ch space in the shell on the last row forms a button hole.

I love this! I made the purse up with a random ball of variegated I had. The shaping for the top looks really pretty. Thanks for the pattern!

I figured out where the correction is, so I deleted my prev. comment.

In row 3, after the repeat, you have to skip 2sts, dc, then continue on with the pattern (skip 2sts, 3tr in next st). This brings you to a total stitch count of 19 for the row. Where if you don't correct, you have 3 extra stitches after the row and there is no 'anchor' btwn the shell and the half-shell.

What do you think, WoollyMamas?

Thanks for the comment sweetirishCT. There was an error in the pattern but this has now been corrected. I hope it makes more sense now.

This is such a cute pattern!

Try a three-double crochet shell. Once completed, fold the purse in half and use a single crochet along the side, the flap and then the other side.

Check out the free crocheted purse patterns on wikiHow as well.
